We are not familiar with ZØYA – or rather, we weren’t. Turns out she’s one of America’s brightest musical promises, walking the fine line between mainstream tones and leftfield attitude, pursuing personal, authentic artistry that has so far paid off greatly. ‘It’s Alright – Acoustic Version’ is the record that caught our attention, a rework of a previously released piece.
While the original finds its uplifting character in a synthwave-esque production, the new version puts ZØYA’s magnificent and raspy vocals on the centrepiece, thanks to a stripped-back arrangement that still doesn’t restraint from offering a certain amount of hazy textures and spacious backing harmonies. It’s here that we can fully appreciate ZØYA’s pure, unfiltered songwriting quality.
