For a project that saw the light of day this year, judah already reached a surprising amount of milestones. Following up on five singles and one EP, the American artist closes the year off with a bang, collecting all his work into a wholesome, career-making album, ‘highschool sweetheart’. It is an impressive record, especially from a project launched earlier this year. That means two things: talent, competence and willingness to open up, and a little pinch of luck (or universe energy). judah has both: his songwriting is relatable, friendly and approachable, working well with the project’s overall aesthetic.
There’s a lot to unpack, lyrically. ‘highschool sweetheart’ is an informed and honest journey through human nature, pain, grief and reckoning. judah doesn’t hold back, pouring honest lyricism into every line. It is also somewhat of a journey through the highs and lows of growing up, shifting into young adulthood. At only 21, the Raleigh artist seems to be slowly finding his way into art, and as far as we can tell, it was meant to be. Life had to be that.
There are a lot of musically rewarding moments in the album. Championing a modern brand of hip-hop, the record features productions blending electronica and punchy beats, moving the needle of a potential target in mainstream settings. A worthy discovery!
