Last year, we uncovered a mysterious and crepuscular tune called ‘Take It Slow’. It came courtesy of a talented Ukraine-based artist called Yarisho and was a track that highly intrigued us.
Then, just last month, a song came across our proverbial desk called ‘Forget’. It was Yarisho! But with a new moniker! Now going by Y07, we felt it was time to sit down with the man behind the music and get to the bottom of some things.
Chatting with us about why he decided to change his pseudonym, what his songwriting process looks like, and just how excited he is to be on this musical journey, please welcome our friend Y07!
Hi Yaroslav, thanks a lot for taking the time to chat with us! Now, last year we discovered and fell in love with your tune ‘Take It Slow’, which was released under the moniker Yarisho. You’re now going by Y07. Why the change?
Hi! I’m glad we have a good reason to get in touch with you again! So much has changed this year, including my moniker. This is the result of rethinking how my music is evolving and where I’m heading.
In fact, before ‘Take it slow,’ I was creating something completely different. I still have some unreleased material in my old style, which will be released under Yarisho. But all the new music will now be released under the name Y07.
Just sticking with ‘Take It Slow’ for a minute, a track we proudly labelled as being “drenched in a blissful shower of textures and abstract soundscapes”. Was there a specific moment or emotion that sparked the creation of the song?
I guess the one thing I can mention is the synthesizer that started it all. It plays in the intro and I was so captivated by it that I couldn’t stop! In this project, my main focus is on the music, while the lyrics are a close second.
OK, now onto your brand new single ‘Forget’. I have to say…It’s another stunner! You just have a way with intricate textures and inventive production. What inspired the unique sonic palette for your latest release?
Thank you so much! It was actually a bit of an experimental method because I love playing around with plug-ins and seeing what sounds work best. It just came naturally. I sat down and wrote. Sometimes it takes days or weeks, but the basis of this track was created in a few hours.
Speaking of inspirations, who would you put down as some of your biggest musical influences and who would you ultimately credit for helping shape and form your overall sound?
I’m sure you’ll agree that James Blake has had a great influence on the genre of music I create. He’s one of my absolute favourites! I was really blown away by his album ‘Playing Robots into Heaven.’ He showed me that such music exists. I can’t help but mention Sampha and Sega Bodega as well.
Please tell us a bit about your songwriting process. Not specifically for any song but just in general. How do you take an idea and turn it into a piece of music?
As I said before, for me, everything starts with sound. I start by looking for a harmony, sample, or tone that feels just right for how I’m feeling at that moment. Once I find that initial spark, I start layering sounds, experimenting, and just letting the music lead me wherever it wants to go. It’s all about trial and error! I try to stay open and explore different directions without overthinking.
Once I’ve got a basic structure down, I like to set the demo aside for a few days. When I come back, I listen with fresh ears, which really helps me evaluate the piece more objectively. If it still speaks to me, I start making it even better! I add textures or tweak details until it feels complete.
For me, it’s all about letting the sound guide the journey and staying patient enough to let the piece reveal itself over time. Lyrics, if there are any, often come after the music, serving as an additional layer to convey the emotions that the music has already laid down.
Success is such a broad term with different meanings for everyone. What would “being successful” in the music industry look like to you?
For me, success in the music industry is all about making a positive impact. It’s so rewarding when people hear my track and it resonates with them. It would be absolutely amazing to hear my music in a movie! I’d love to be able to contribute to the storytelling and reach new audiences in a unique way.
Sometimes I have really big visions – I’ll put out a track and imagine filling a stadium! But honestly, right now, success would be as simple and powerful as someone calling my song “the soundtrack of this fall’.
Which of your lyrics would you like to see printed on a T-shirt?
This track hasn’t been released yet, but I would love a T-shirt with the words “Heal My Soul” on it.
Yaroslav, it’s been an absolute pleasure having you here! Thanks again for taking the time! I know ‘Forget’ will likely form part of an upcoming debut album but, I guess in a broader sense, what do you hope your musical future has in store?
Wow, that is quite a challenging question. I even took a second to think about how to answer it without turning it into a long, deep philosophical reflection on life, but that might be impossible 🙂
The world is ever-changing and unpredictable, and the only thing I can say for sure is that I’ll keep creating because music is an inseparable part of who I am. In the near future, I plan to release a few more singles, followed by an album! I’m also working on new material right now. It’s worth mentioning that this journey is incredibly exciting.
Thank you for having me, it was a pleasure chatting with you. Until next time!
