Upon listening to ‘Get on You’, one might be tempted to shrug it off as a wonderful disco-pop tune. While that might be true, the artistic gravitas of the record runs much deeper, flourishing in empowering lyricism that explores all the fierceness and pride of being a woman. Penned by London-based newcomer Winnie Ama, ‘Get on You’ is the full package, as they say: an impressive ear-candied production, relatable and catchy songwriting, and a teachable theme. Of course, Ama is not new to music gifts, having gifted her listeners with musical goodness since 2020.
Describing the record, Winnie explains: “It’s about being confident enough to take a risk and express your desire to be close to someone. I feel like often people are scared of rejection or end up waiting for the other person to make the first overt move, but that often ends in a stalemate and potentially missed opportunities to get to know the other person better. I think sometimes gender norms dictate how people see themselves and what they can do in the pursuit of love or romantic attention, and I don’t think it should matter.”
‘Get on You’ is the project’s first original release of the year, with more to be unveiled – stay tuned!
