The keen reader might remember British troubadour Will Knox. Featuring one of his stunning songs on our blog earlier this year – ‘Pillow Scream’ – we proudly celebrated it as “an honest, fragile gem”. We stand by our words: Knox has the rare ability to draw vivid lyrical paintings, balanced on poignant and cathartic folk arrangements.
‘English Silence’ is the strongest evidence of that: Knox’s latest album, the record contains eleven soft musical nuggets, taking the listeners into Will’s honest and resilient songwriting expertise. From opener ‘Instant Coffee’, comforting and harmonically rich, to more nuanced and melancholic anthems such as ‘Twentysomething’, the album deals with the ever-changing nature of life and the nuances of familial relationships. Focus track ‘Body Talk’, written with Belgian songstress Emma Bale, highlights how crucial is to fully understand fellow human beings.
Flashes of introspective nostalgia help ‘English Silence’ become a sort of soundtrack for everyday living – simply, Knox donates a musical livery to our deepest thoughts. The record is a personal affair: it will take on a different meaning for different people, and that’s how it should be – it’s Will’s gift to his listeners.
‘English Silence’ has been recorded in London by producer Ian Grimble (Bear’s Den, Daughter, Axel Flovent). Speaking about the inspiration behind it, Knox explains: “The time allowed me to confront a lot of issues from my past, and I was determined not to pass on any of my own issues to my child”.
