In April last year, we stumbled upon a deeply poignant and introspective tune called ‘The Creek‘. Courtesy of an Illinois-based singer/songwriter and guitarist who performs under the moniker Wilhelm, the ethereal indietronica track instantly wormed its way into our hearts.
Having patiently waited to hear from Wilhelm again, the artist finally answered our calls yesterday! Unleashing his third full-length album ‘Wake Me in the Sunrise’, a nine-track offering of lo-fi and folky goodness, Wilhelm takes listeners on a raw and evocative sonic journey filled with heartfelt storytelling.
‘Midnight Caller on the Moon’ is the perfect scene-setter – immediately immersing one in the musician’s haunting and fragile soundscape. ‘Obituary Page’ then steps up to the plate, and this is where one gets a real sense of the vocal talents possessed by Wilhelm. Intimate and moving, it feels shaped by the very depths of his soul.
‘Upon the Thinnest Lips’ has a dark and almost eerie vibe to it, before the wonderfully inventive and stripped-back ‘All the Things I Need to Say’ comes into play.
Other personal favourites include the beautiful ‘One to Keep You Warm’ and the record’s gentle closer ‘Hold Your Head Now, Baby’. Truthfully though, the entire album deserves your undivided attention. It’s superb!
