One of the most quirky and unique outfits to have blessed our pages recently, Wednesday’s Child seem to have a very clear idea about where they are headed. Sonically, it would be hard not to feel electrified and shaken, once heard the group’s eclectic mix of psych-rock and punk references, often interlaced by more eclectic and mellow elements. Refusing to align with the polished sound of today’s music landscape, Wednesday’s Child pursue a more raw, unfiltered aesthetic, perhaps offering us all a welcome break from an over-standardized industry.
Lyrically, they seem to have figured it out too: on a mission to honour legendary soul heroes The Ronettes, Wednesday’s Child are in the process of releasing a single for each one of the group’s ‘sisterhood’ circle, transforming their artistic output into a celebration of one of the most influential acts of the 60s and 70s. Coincidentally, now is the turn of Ronnie Spector – head honcho and original ‘bad girl’ of rock’n’roll.
‘Ronnie’ is Wednesday’s Child’s honest and fierce tribute to her: recorded live, the track tells reveals the musical force of a band clearly on to something great. Lyrically, ‘Ronnie’ shares some nostalgia while keeping a hopeful tone. As the group explains: “Our song is from the perspective of someone feeling lost and nostalgic for what could have been, but finding ways to stay hopeful through Ronnie’s music. We have put our sincere love into these tracks.”
