A complex and colourful offering, ‘Unbreakable Soul’ is the latest effort by NYC-based producer and songwriter Wavewulf. Built over electronica, synthwave and new wave influences, the record is as expansive and cathartic as one would expect. Featuring a series of original pieces and some remixes, the album also contains a number of guest vocalists, with Nala Spark being a frequent collaborator.
There’s a lot to dig through, but for us, a big part of ‘Unbreakable Soul’ are the dream-pop, alternative efforts that open the album. Episodes such as ‘Faces and Places’, ‘Every City I See’ and even the title track. True cosmic singles with a distinct leftfield aura, yet still maintaining relatable and catchy female vocals and deep, meaningful lyrics.
‘Echo In the Dark’, featuring LiAura, jumps into darker territories, balanced between post-rock and dark wave. This is evidence of Wavewulf’s expansive artistry, able to operate in a wide variety of settings and musical genres. Speaking about the album, he explains: “A testament to the enduring strength of the human spirit amidst life’s trials”.
