Vølve Calls for Vulnerability in Latest Jewel ‘Les Trois Amies’

I live by the firm belief that music has to be vibrant, evocative and meaningful. It needs to evoke a personal reaction in the listeners. Danish songstress Vølve seems to agree with that, penning material that’s incredibly nuanced and tender, exuding cathartic energy and veiled mystical themes. Inspired by Nordic mythology – as we would expect from her – Vølve walks a fine thread, one that ties together ethereal tones, classical influences, and lush, heartwarming vocals.

‘Les Trois Amies’ is the perfect evidence of that: oscillating between folk and neoclassical pop, the single is Vølve’s second effort to date, following up from ‘Enter the Unknown’, released last October. Known by day as Helene Navne, the talented creative is an artistic genius worth worshipping: the feeling of having stumbled upon something special and intimate is overwhelming, as is the listening experience associated with it.

The crepuscular piano arpeggios contrast perfectly with Navne’s angelic vocals, together with the expansive harmonies around them. From a songwriting standpoint, ‘Les Trois Amies’ focuses on vulnerabilities as a means for authenticity, all steeped in elegant French lyrics. As the Danish musician explains: “The song pays tribute to three women: a mermaid longing for the sea, a sorceress who sleeps with a stuffed white rabbit, and a fairy who dances alone while searching for love.”
