I couldn’t resist sharing Vlimmer with you all. It fits that industrial, somber and decadent vibe I am so fond of, all drenched in a healthy amount of retro fashion. Exploring the likes of darkwave, synthwave and new wave with an open mind and heightened eclecticism, the visionary Berlin-based creative has been hypnotising listeners for a few years, and his artistic output doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.
‘Firmament’ is the single that caught our attention. Taken from Vlimmer’s latest offering ‘Diskomfort EP’, the track benefits from obscure drum machines, gritty bass lines and an overall sense of space and floatiness, a quality that’s well reflected in Alexander Leonard Donat’s understated, buoyant vocals, here seemingly lost in the mix – sounding like a far-away, spiritual prophet.
Overall, ‘Firmament’ is a stunning record, although likely not to be for everybody. Personally, I rejoice in leftfield territories, soviet gloominess and post-punk glory – all common features in Vlimmer’s glorious catalogue. Speaking about the inspiration behind it, the German musician explains: “This song is a direct response to last year’s album, ‘Bodenhex’, which was partly intended to really hit the listeners in their guts, like a punch to the stomach.”
