Highly charismatic, ‘Under Your Skin’ could be defined as a slow-paced evocative gem, a melancholic and mysterious tune that could soundtrack a lone journey through geographic and introspective adversities. Built on a spacious yet minimal arrangement, the record flourishes over spaghetti-western guitars and polite drums, giving the piece a rather epic character. It’s the perfect match for VIOLET SALT’s wholesome vocals, delivered with unwavering commitment and enhanced nostalgia.
A blend of icy blues-rock, indie sleaze and pop relatability, produced by Matthew Collins, ‘Under Your Skin’ represents VIOLET SALT’s debut record, and if it’s anything to go by, we are in for some great material. Emerging from Brisbane, the talented songstress has been floating around the local music scene for some time, slowly building her smoky and hazy brand of dark-lined songwriting.
Speaking about the track, she explains: “The song is quite dark lyrically. I’ve always been intrigued by songs like ‘In the Air Tonight’ by Phil Collins, ‘You’re So Vain’ by Carly Simon, or even ‘Kill Bill’ by SZA, where you can just hear this visceral sense of feeling, be it hurt or anger or revenge, and you just think, who exactly inspired this? How much of this is real, and how much is imagined or built upon by the artist?”
