Navigating the dazzling experience that is modern life, sometimes we tend to get distracted, resulting in our artistic endeavours being cast aside, even just for a moment. Or perhaps, we just go through a chronic lack of inspiration, and we must take some rest and regroup. For VIKINGS, a three-year hiatus was a necessary action, allowing them to experiment with their artistry and found a new sonic identity, a new formula capable of pushing them to the forefront of contemporary music.
Originally debuting in 2017, the Canadian group used the pandemic-induced lockdowns as a creative push, settling down in their studios on endless sessions. Day after day, songs took shape and meaning, with the Winnipeg trio now ready to release them all.
‘Tanlines/Swimming In The Night’ is VIKING’s welcome comeback, as they gear up for an upcoming album and more new music. What we get is perhaps VIKINGS 2.0, with a sound exploring wider sonic references, taking a step back from their synthwave origins, instead focusing on a more mainstream, pop-driven aesthetic. And we have to say, it works! ‘Tanlines’ is a slice of upbeat goodness, delivering a totally danceable track with catchy, memorable melodies and a chorus to die for. On the other hand, ‘Swimming In The Night’ is certainly more reflective, taking a page out of their older material. Introduced by a retro-flavoured bass line, the track moves fast, between groovy beats and haunting vibes. Definitely night-like!
Overall, a great effort from VIKINGS, who showcase their musical prowess and their ability to reinvent themselves without losing a beat. Recommended!
