Varlowe Debuts with Sleazy Banger ‘telephone’

As debut singles go, Varlowe really hits the mark, entering the indie and slacker pop panorama with incredible charisma and sleaziness. Emerging from Southern California, the talented newcomer is only sixteen, an impressive age to be releasing good music at. ‘telephone’ is Varlowe’s debut effort, and yes, it is in fact a great record. While he defines it as slacker rock, we do see a lot of dream pop and new wave elements in it.

Perfectly fitting the modern aesthetic of a chilled-out, casual tune, ‘telephone’ might be lo-fi and indie, but it still provides a pretty bucolic and ethereal listening experience, with Varlowe’s vocals sounding spacious, intimate and rather relaxed. Produced on Logic by Varlowe himself, the track reached its current status thanks to Youtube tutorials – and frankly, it must really be working for him. ‘telephone’ sounds very convincing and solid.

Delving into the inspiration behind the record, Varlowe explains: “telephone was inspired by songs I’ve heard with that summer slacker rock lo-fi sound to it, which I really enjoy. I wanted it to be a super chill summer song, that could just be on in the background somewhere, like a car drive or coffeeshop.”
