Upon entering ‘Almost Island’s aural experience, I quickly realised how impressed I was with the project. Intricate, genre-bending electronica with an elegant flair and adventurous sound design, the album certainly deserves more recognition than it seems to have gotten so far. Although I am sure it’s just a matter of time, goodness always rises to the surface, eventually. Penned by Brooklyn-based sonic voyager Uncanny Valet, ‘Almost Island’ accompanies the listeners on a nuanced, quirky journey alongside IDM, experimental tones and vintage machinery.
The record makes good use of analogue synths as well as digital glitches and unmatched sampling techniques, often taking the compositional formula in unexpected, surprising directions. In fact, ‘Almost Island’ takes a different approach from some of Uncanny Valet’s previous work, by incorporating a great deal of 80s tropes and references, fragments of nostalgia weaved into the digital domain.
The project has been compared to the likes of Oneohtrix Point Never, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Aphex Twin, which speaks volumes about the talented artistry behind the project. Other than being a musician, the American creative is also a published writer and author, and the owner of a publishing company.
