Overall, Trust The Mask seem to be having an impressively productive year. Not only quantitatively – with the Italian outfit unveiling their third single – but also from a quality standpoint. The duo’s sonic universe is some of the most nuanced electronica we have heard in a while, perfectly paired with their futuristic and mangled vocals. Following up from ‘Otaku’, a piece we described as “channelling glitch-flavoured sound design and immersive textures”, Trust The Mask now shares ‘Our Fault’, their latest effort.
In it, the listener will discover the project’s mellower side, although the lyrical intensity will still be fully present. Sonically, ‘Our Fault’ drives along steadier avenues, preferring retro-laden synthetisers to experimental tones. A moody and alternative leftfield record, the track grows into an ethereal and cinematic jewel in the outro, taking to a conclusion what has been a very compelling sonic journey.
Lyrically, ‘Our Fault’ seeks to celebrate Mother Earth. As Trust The Mask explains: “Trust the Mask are seeking connection. Connection to the world amidst an increasingly fractured global environment. ‘Our Fault’ is a letter of apology to Mother Earth. Written during the lockdown, when it seemed pretty clear that Nature was sending us a terrible message after centuries of abuse.”
