It’s good to see Trickshooter Social Club back with new material, although we are pretty impressed with how productive they have been recently. Earlier in October, we were busy writing about their previous record ‘Mile Wide’, a bluesy, rowdy and punchy stomp rock anthem. Well, safe to say, the vibe has now shifted with ‘Better Than Love’, a wonderfully evocative gem that showcases Trickshooter Social Club’s mellower side.
It’s a triumph: on a slow-paced, wholesome instrumental, guitarist Larry Liss and frontman Steve Simoncic rally together to deliver a heartfelt, meaningful ballad. The keen reader will be aware of the fact that rock ballads are globally considered the best ones… draw your one conclusion! ‘Better Than Love is one of those intense, luscious records that stick around for decades.
Lyrically, the group explains how the track was primarily inspired by their heroes John Prine and Leonard Cohen: “It is about two people who might be friends, or family members, or in a relationship. We’re not sure. And it doesn’t matter. This song is about the intimacy that comes from fully accepting the person who is sitting next to you. Not judging them. Not trying to change them.”
