The interesting thing about music is that even if you cast it aside, it will eventually come back. It does because it was part of your identity and soul. And so, even if life gets in the way, music will eventually find its way back to you. Could be after six months, or years later. Just believe! British rocker Trevena can guarantee it. After abandoning every musical activity at the age of 21, the Derby guitarist returned to it 35 years later, determined to pursue the raw and classic energy of rock’n’roll.
In essence, Trevena champions a guitar-heavy sound. Be it hard rock, or acoustic ballads, you’ll find him playing five strings with the same passion. Joined by producer Joe Lonsdale and Chris Cron on vocals, they set out on an album mission, eventually birthing ‘Distant Lights’, a long-length record collecting some of the previous singles and new tracks.
It is for sure an interesting sonic journey. Shifting constantly from acoustic to electric guitars, Trevena creates a tribute to the ‘guitar’ as an iconic instrument, navigating a plethora of genres in the process. Take the first three songs, for instance: ‘Roll the Bones’ delivers fierce and energetic hard rock, while ‘Danse Macabre’ focuses on a more poignant AOR sound, preferring melodic material to riff action. ‘One More Drink’ strips it back even further, championing acoustic vibes and a folk aesthetic. ‘Karenza’ is perhaps the record’s most intimate effort, a simple and heartwarming gem.
