Actively pursuing his own path, blending genres and inspirations into a strong identity and a personal style, British singer and producer ToyQueens has been blessing our music landscape for a while now. Debuting in 2020, he’s been building his audience through a series of carefully crafted singles, all sharing the same aesthetic and sonic characteristics.
You see, ToyQueens stands for a cascade of emo goodness, hitting you right in the face, layered over punchy hip-hop beats and punk-derived gritty guitars. Like if Bring Me The Horizons and Machine Gun Kelly had a child. What’s not missing here, is the intensity: the Brighton resident knows how to build a vibe, breaking down every note into an emotionally fulfilling sauce.
One of the project’s latest efforts takes the shape of ‘Obvious’ (Stay A While)’. Following up on previous single ‘DROPDEADCANDY’ (one of the most streamed in the artist’s catalogue), the record wants to pursue a more radio-friendly sonic direction, allowing the track to potentially reach a bigger number of listeners. Acoustic guitars play a vital role here, together with ‘00s pop’-derived beats, making it possible for ToyQueens to indulge in quieter, mellower melodies, building the perfect environment for us to be able to hear the English talent’s clean vocals.
Lyrically, he draws imagery from his personal universe, namely “inspired by horror ideas and old mythology; each song holds double meanings and character development.” To mention, ToyQueens produces his own material, which is frankly impressive. We are on board!
