Long Island-based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Toby TomTom came bouncing into my world a little over a year ago with his genre-bending and eclectic single ‘Black Swan’. It was a tune unlike any I’d heard, and knew I had to keep an eye on his work. ’23’ then came along, a track we at Mesmerized described as “an expansive, eclectic, and empowering anthem”. Now, hot off the presses, is ‘I Need A Yoko’, TomTom’s brand new song. Let’s dive in…
Sonically, it’s almost unrecognisable from Toby’s previous two releases – a poignant and vulnerable acoustic ballad inspired by the love between John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Raw and highly emotional, it’s a deeply immersive tune that hauntingly explores the search for a deep and enduring connection.
As far as vocal performances go, TomTom delivers in a way I didn’t know he was capable of. Showcasing a new depth that brings his storytelling to life, it’s a powerful expression of genuine and unguarded emotion.
Having toyed with the idea of releasing ‘I Need A Yoko’ for years, and admittedly fearful of completely stripping down his musical arrangements, Toby TomTom finally gave in to his fans’ requests. We’re so glad he did! Onwards and upwards!
