They Call Me Max Release Eclectic Jewel ‘Algorithms’

‘Algorithms’ has been a truly surprising discovery. From a sonic stand-point, the track is incredibly elegant and lush, yet quite raw and melancholic. Built on a skeleton of warm, jazz-flavoured piano chords, the record makes ample use of old-school hip-hop beats and electronic textures, then topping it all with They Call Me Max’s obscure and vivid rap flow. Hailing from London, the group is a breath of fresh air in the British music landscape.

A quintet, They Call Me Max is a good example of collaborative effort. While we don’t know all the details about how the project was formed, it’s easy to imagine all five members influencing each other’s artistry. The result is a melting pot of styles and aesthetics, perfectly contemporary yet still familiar and catchy. ‘Algorithms’ showcases it all, especially when it comes to the band’s intricate and meaningful lyricism.

Speaking about the songwriting behind the single, They Call Me Max explains: “A reflection on the cultural, spiritual and humanitarian cost of developing into a more virtual existence, and the psychological dangers of living in a world where laws are based on mathematics and analytics instead of nature and physics.”
