There’s a lot to discover in ‘Any Minute Now’. Wrapped in gloomy, obscure post-rock stylings and noisy electronica, the record carries a healthy amount of poignancy and melancholy, making for a general sense of doom perfectly mirrored in the dense, eerie guitar distortions. Such an evocative and emo-like listening experience perfectly adapts to our dark, twisted reality.
Over 10 tracks, the album shifts from leftfield offerings such as ‘So Skywards’ – lost in a myriad of textures and soundscapes – and more conventional, mainstream-lenient pieces; take for instance lead single ‘Phantoms’, with its overarching Muse flavouring, or follow-up ‘Hello World’, sharing a distinct dream-pop and shoegaze character. These Dead Machines is the talented human behind such a rich, varied album.
Known by day as Dan, the Manchester-based talent found himself alone in a room during the pandemic lockdowns. Fresh from a band breakup, he embarked on a lyrical and philosophical exploration that’s relevant and relatable, as he eloquently explains: “deeply personal and yet universal themes of loss, love, anxiety and resilience”. ‘Heartstrings’ is your go-to track if you are looking for pure songwriting prowess and acoustic guitars, while ‘Illuminate’ takes it back to industrial, glitchy territories.
