Pretty evocative and hazy, ‘Cottagecore’ is a rather curious offering. Balanced between retrowave and dream pop, the track feels euphoric and quirky, taking The Winter Sounds to higher artistic territories. The sonic references are nostalgic, yet the single itself feels truly futuristic. Not a bad outcome for the talented outfit, here celebrating themselves as one of the most interesting groups we have heard in a while.
‘Cottagecore’ anticipates The Winter Sound’s upcoming album, ‘Bedazzled, but not Forgotten’, expected on October 11th via Kitty Kant Collective. Headed by Patrick Keenan, the group has a long history of notable records behind them, shifting their home base from Athens, Greece, to a Czech town, where they are currently based. The musical energy is still the same, and honestly, they only seem to get better release after release.
Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘Cottagecore’, Keenan explains: “It was written to explore that temptation of retreat into the idyllic cottage in the forest shut off from the rest of the world and all its hardships. The temptation is profound as the world seems so full of suffering, but it isn’t an expression of care; rather, it is one of self-preservation”.
