Formed all the way back in 2007, The Winter Sounds quickly established themselves as one of Georgia’s must-see live acts. Now based in the Czech Republic, the three-piece band is pioneering an innovative musical style inspired by the literary movement of Solarpunk. Effortlessly merging elements of bedroom pop, retrowave, and fuzz-pop, The Winter Sounds recently unleashed a five-track EP titled ‘Europa’, and it’s a record that has left me thoroughly impressed, to say the least.
Recorded with Derek Garten (Taylor Swift, Jewel, Brittany Howard) in Nashville, Tennessee, ‘Dreams at the Speed of Light’ is the EP’s opener, and sets the tone perfectly for what’s to come. An upbeat slice of indie-rock brilliance, it grabs hold of the listener from the very first note.
‘Catch Your Breath’ then steps up to the plate in a similar infectious fashion, before the more delicate and laidback ‘A Tear in the Ocean’ gets introduced. A short and sweet instrumental called ‘Broumovský Valčík’ serves as the record’s fourth tune, and we finish things up with the truly incredible ‘Autumn Wind’.
An EP of the highest order, ‘Europa’ is an offering that I cannot recommend highly enough. It’s simply superb from start to finish, and I can’t wait to dive into The Winter Sounds’ previous releases.
