There’s something inherently familiar in ‘Eat Alone’. Perhaps it’s the nostalgic hint of R.E.M., or the overall power rock character that’s so prominent in the track. Or maybe, it’s The Open Flames‘ wholesome and vibrant lyricism, delivered with incredible charisma and vibrancy by the group’s head honcho and singer Dave Eastman.
Anticipating the upcoming album ‘Same Time Next Year’, the single provides an attentive look at the features that make the project such a relatable and lush promise. From a sonic standpoint, ‘Eat Alone’ is sharp and dynamic, with fuzzy guitar tones evoking late 80s and early 90s stylings, and rolling drum grooves fully serving Eastman’s songwriting. Nevertheless, the record manages to maintain a modern flair, and we are confident there’s a large audience for it out there.
We should also mention that ‘Eat Alone’ is considerably punchier and rowdier than its predecessor, ‘Drop a Coin’. Speaking about the inspiration behind the song’s lyricism, Dave explains: “Eat Alone’ is about when you want to help someone who’s hurting, and they don’t want the help. It’s a heartbreaking situation that we try to show through a caregiver’s pleas — and memories — and the noise of the song.”
