As proud multi-genre lovers, we at Mesmerized find comfort in the unpredictable beauty of artists who embrace diversity. Sure, it can sometimes be hit-and-miss, but in the case of ‘Det er en egen lomme’, it is most certainly the former. Courtesy of a Norwegian three-piece instrumental outfit called The Leif, the ten-track offering fuses elements of jazz, rock, and pop to concoct an open-minded celebration of creativity.
Serving as the band’s third full-length album, ‘Det er en egen lomme’, or ‘There is a separate pocket’, sees Magnus, Per, and Tellef continuing on their quirky, intricate, and experimental sonic path. From short chord progressions, walking bass lines, and noisy 14/8 riffs, the trio craft a daring and dynamic record that feels somehow both comforting and unpredictable simultaneously.
“While collective songwriting is sometimes criticized for diluting the artistic process, we believe it lies at the heart of what it means to make music as a band,” says The Leif. “Embracing this collaborative approach is central to our philosophy”.
This album is an exception to my routine of highlighting specific tunes, and I’ve done that intentionally. ‘Det er en egen lomme’ deserves to be put on and appreciated in all its glory. It’s simply astounding stuff, and I can’t wait to explore the act’s discography further!
