At the beginning of this year, we stumbled across the new-wave pop of Swedish-based duo The Killing Tapes. It was their ‘Falling Down (Yellow)’ EP that had caught our collective ears, and now they’re back with the second instalment of a trilogy in the form of ‘Falling Down (Blue)’. Featuring five brand new tracks, the EP takes a detour from the band’s debut album ‘Black’, and leans into more electronic and synthwave territory. ‘Shortwave’, the EP’s opener, features Swedish singer/songwriter Charlie Linnell on vocals, and her ethereal and textured voice provides the perfect tapestry for the tune’s dreamy, floaty atmosphere.
‘Behaving in a Locked Room’ follows ‘Shortwave’ and it’s yet another intricate and rich piece of music. Downtempo, to begin with, the tune slowly builds itself up and transports you to another world with more cosmic and ambient elements coming into play.
‘All for Nothing’, ‘Too Late for Breakfast’, and ‘Predestined’ serve as the remaining three tracks on the EP and, truthfully, I could write an entire article on each one of them. They have a life and a soul of their own and this latest EP from The Killing Tapes is truly one of the best I’ve heard all year!
