The keen reader might remember Detroit punk outfit The Idiot Kids from a previous feature; writing about ‘Wilted Bloom’, we proudly declared: “Although essentially a pop-punk anthem, its sonic profile is much more nuanced, at times dark and complex, with a distinct lo-fi quality and pungent distortions”. We stand by our words; that’s why we are excited to share with you all ‘Chapels’, the group’s latest album, a fascinating collection of fuzzy, fierce guitar-powered material that’s bound to showcase the stylistic magnitude The Idiot Kids have to offer.
Over twelve engaging tracks, the American band is seen slightly deviating from their punk imprint, shifting into obscure alt-rock and dark wave territories. ‘Your Machine’ gets given the role of album opener (right after ‘Introduction’), and instantly we are reminded of the sheer blend of euphoric rock energy contained in the record. Further along, ‘Bedside’ contains a glimpse of 80s guitar tones, a nostalgic feature that’s honestly so great to come across with.
‘Chapels’ draws its end with ‘Obsession’, a long, glorious gallop that’s as cathartic as it is mysterious. Speaking about the album’s lyricism, The Idiot Kids explain: “The overarching themes on the album deal with how religious trauma can affect queer people like myself at a very young age, and how that continues to shape and influence yourself well into adulthood.”
