‘Small Again’ is an interesting specimen. You see, it starts on a wholesome note, with guitar-powered textures lending their tapestry of magic to a hypnotising intro. Soon, The Fades enter the sonic picture with their sleazy and meaningful brand of indie/punk pop, building charming melodies on a bed of clean guitar tones and intricate vocal harmonies. If we had to describe it in layman’s terms, we’d probably say The Fades remind us of a quirky blend between Blink 182 and Death Cab For Cutie, oscillating between sleazy and rebellious energy and more poignant, emotional riffing.
Not a bad concoction eh? Given that every band member is likely to have been born in the 90s, those references make perfect sense. It’s also a pretty genius move, allowing different fanbases and a wider audience to familiarize themselves with the project. What really makes the difference though is the extent The Fades have gone to with their vocal harmonies: ‘Small Again’ becomes a maze of call-and-response, in its ending.
Lyrically, the song focuses on a rather nostalgic subject, exploring all the memories associated with records from the group’s younger years. As frontman Dave explains: “I’m thinking of all the songs that make me cry, and how as the years go by, there are so many more of them….”
