Introduced by abstract textures, ‘Break Away’ showcases its poignant and nostalgic character from the get-go, preparing the listeners for an experience that’s incredibly rewarding, if not empowering. The record evolves through luscious territories, thanks to Massimiliano Porcelli’s evocative and malleable vocals, slowly driving the track towards its resolution: an anthemic, colossal chorus packed with indie energy and a certain pop flair – especially seen in its curated songwriting.
Collaborator Stina Hellberg lends her soothing vocals to the cause, creating a stark yet very functional contrast with Porcelli’s deeper, darker tone. It is a constant chiaroscuro that greatly enriches the song, giving it an immensely nuanced character and tons of emotional energy. ‘Break Away’ is then poised to end in full swing, with furious drum grooves and a full production – almost cinematic, we’d dare say.
Paolo Tognoloni completes The Bigger Picture’s lineup, here presented as a duo (Porcelli and Tognoloni) with Hellberg, Quagliotto and Malek on instrumental duties. Speaking about the record, the pair explains: “It is a hymn to reconstruction. It’s an incentive to find courage and walk through the darkness in order to find the light, nothing is definitive and there is no such thing as an end without a new beginning”.
