An old British friend once told me that guitar tones get fuzzier and rowdier the deeper you ascend into the country. There must be some truth in that, as some of the more rebellious and hard-hitting bands tend to come from the North. The Avelons are the perfect example of that; hailing from Newcastle, the talented group has long showcased its unrepentant, energetic and chaotic flair to anyone keen enough to listen.
I am keen – I am super keen. Always have been. In particular, my attention has been captured by ‘The Gallows’, The Avelon’s latest EP. Inspired by Sergio Leone’s Spaghetti Western movies, the record seems to find a middle ground between your standard punchy indie matter and an angrier, anthemic indie livery. From a lyrical standpoint, The Avelons are busy exploring the line between friend and foe – a theme often central in Leone’s storytelling.
Featuring three stunning tracks, including previous single ‘Blondie’, ‘The Gallows’ is a definite step-up for the English rockers, and we are looking forward to witnessing their artistic growth. Speaking about the inspiration behind the record, singer Jack Oldham explains: “Having previously released ‘Blondie’, I became obsessed with this character we’d half-borrowed, half-created. I wanted to embellish his tale. I wanted to hear the beauty of the classic Western film in an all-out, ballsy British indie format!”
