The Art of the Sun Celebrates Vintage Funk in ‘Dreams’

‘Dreams’ is a record that’s frankly irresistible, euphoric and mesmerising. A pearl from another era, the track navigates 70s-flavoured funk and soul, not just in its aesthetic, but also in its recording quality, which delves greatly into lo-fi territories, maintaining a strong organic perspective and authentic character. Penned by French sonic wizard The Art of the Sun, ‘Dreams’ seeks to pay homage to the iconic 1972 Wattstax festival, an event that unleashed a wave of positive energy through funk and music.

Anticipating a larger release expected for December 8th, ‘Imaginary Journeys’, The Art of the Sun seems very committed to exploring original artistry and celebrating glorious nostalgia. Chaotic on the surface, ‘Dreams’ flourishes thanks to immensely groovy basslines, synth-powered arpeggios, punchy drums and ceremonial, anthemic vocals. It all mirrors the French creative’s eclectic character.

Describing the circumstances around Wattstax festival, serving as inspiration for the song, The Art of the Sun explains: “Located within the challenging neighbourhoods of Los Angeles, this festival marked a transformative chapter in the narrative of Afro-American music and communities. It represented a monumental confluence of political and musical forces, featuring the era’s preeminent soul and funk artists.”
