Hailing from Brighton’s illustrious musical shore, Tenderhooks might not be teenagers anymore, but that doesn’t stop them from delivering the most elegant and vibrant rock’n’roll material. Drenched in tradition, the English group blends Britpop stylings with 70s flair and a decisively pop imprint, a quality mostly found in Tenderhooks’ relatable, catchy lyricism – they are not just all about their guitars.
In fact, judging by their latest effort, ‘Mother Said’, their guitars are pretty polite; indulging in crunch and fuzzy tones, they never overpower the vocals, instead focusing on groovy, playful riffs and fast-paced licks. Charl Cronje’s lead vocals – a new feature for the group, alongside usual frontman Markus Leinweber – are incredibly charming and confident, exhibiting almost a crooning character. In the chorus, we’d go as far as to compare the group with The Beatles, at least for their harmonies and collective efforts.
Overall, ‘Mother Said’ is not a record that seeks to innovate, nor one that wants to push the boundaries of the contemporary forward. It is, rather, a familiar, comfortable and warm slice of musical goodness, penned by a talented group of musicians who have clear ideas about their sound and songwriting.
