When it comes to British upcomers, a reference to London singer and songwriter Teddy Clarke is well in order. Debuting in 2021, he’s been steadily climbing the ladder, passing through various BBC Introducing features and general clamour. Now, the London talent returns with his latest single, ‘Poor Man’s Son’, a powerful commentary on the current class divide. Written in collaboration with longtime producers Analog & Digital, the song speaks to the reality of how difficult it can be to achieve one’s ambitions when not born with privilege.
Fast-paced, gritty yet dynamic, the track features a certain old-school flair, building on organic surf-rock vibes and spaghetti western guitars, only to jump into the best British indie-rock in the song’s bridge. All in all, those are perfect settings for Clarke’s strong yet nuanced vocals, capable of kidnapping the listener into their own artistic universe.
Describing the lyrical premise behind the track, Clarke explains: “It has become more and more apparent over the past few years how the incredibly wealthy continue to benefit from great wealth, while those without the same advantages face increasingly steep odds. Poor Man’s Son talks about a boy who comes to this realisation at a young age, and attempts to defy these odds.”
