‘Laugh On Me’ needs to be experienced at its own pace. Moving slowly, with ever-modulating intensity and crepuscular tones, the record is a slice of cathartic energy, a celebration of poignancy and fearless abandon. Penned by Utah native Blake Aaron Henderson under the moniker TaughtMe, ‘Laugh On Me’ could be generally described as a folk effort, but in reality, it’s much more. Spacious, airy organic instrumentation creates a rather ethereal scenario, one where cinematic soundscapes and quirky guitars are perfectly at home.
There’s also a definite shift in the song. The energy rises up dramatically towards the 1.20 mark, in a triumph of strings and textures. Then – silence. Back to the start… except for a veiled and fragile saxophone solo, slowly taking the listeners back into the same magical atmosphere they experienced right before.
Quite a stunning record from TaughtMe, which wouldn’t be the same without his controlled, evocative and nuanced vocals, carrying all the gravitas that comes from the nostalgic lyricism behind ‘Laugh On Me’. As the American creative explains: “I think of this song as a plea or a prayer. The singer begs for an intervention from higher powers. He asks to be obliterated lovingly, to be poured out and exposed. There’s a deep longing in there, a yearning for catharsis and purification.”
