As pop goes, ‘Sweet Nothing’ is rather introspective and nuanced. Built on crepuscular tones, intimate synth sweeps and light drum machines, the single moves with elegance and charm, oscillating between understated sections and more punchy and loud contours. It all works well with Tara Hack‘s poignant and enthralling vocals, dancing on the instrumental with a strong evocative and cinematic quality.
Placing itself at the intersection of hyper pop and mainstream electronica, ‘Sweet Nothing’ can certainly be considered a banger. One of those bangers that develops slowly and with good taste, for the keen listener. Usually known for her pop guitar-based material, New York and London-based Tara Hack takes an artistic gamble by collaborating with producer Benny D (Boy George, Kylie, Robbie Williams, Paloma Faith), allowing her to expand her sonic horizons.
It does pay off: ‘Sweet Nothing’ feels like the perfect companion for Hack’s luscious vocal tone. As she explains: “As soon as I heard Benny D’s instrumental arrangement of what would eventually become ‘Sweet Nothing’ we were totally blown away and within an hour the track was complete”.
