Some songs have a deep meaning behind them and are born out of necessity, a strong need for personal expression. Perhaps as a personal catharsis towards a painful experience, or as a tool for growth and coping with change. Take Tallulah Rendall’s latest effort, for instance. ‘Be Free’ found its inspiration in the complex reality of the pandemic, while dealing with loss and familiar grief. It’s a soothing, mellow and delicate listening experience, creating a stark contrast with the seriousness and dark contour of its lyricism.
Introduced by a fantastic acoustic guitar, ‘Be Free’ moves at a relatively slow pace, blessed by polite soundscapes and vocal harmonies. Such wholesome and organic arrangement provides the perfect framework for Rendall’s evocative and poignant voice, boasting a malleable and cinematic tone which we won’t forget easily.
Describing the circumstances around the song, Tallulah Rendall explains: “I wrote Be Free in 2020 during the opening months of lockdown […] My father was desperately ill, in intensive care, battling for his life and my community was split between conspiracy theorists, pro-vaxers and those trying to navigate some middle ground within it all.”
