A rising star in the contemporary jazz scene, Nico Moreno sounds wiser and more experienced than his actual age. Based in New York City, where he’s the recipient of a New York University scholarship, Moreno started out in Bogotá, a city that left heightened Latin American influences on his overall style and character. Now, it all drips down in his instrumental voice, eclectic and cathartic.
‘Cornerstone’ is Nico’s latest effort, a three-dimensional jazz record encompassing decades of musical evolution. From bebop’s fast-paced solos to cool jazz’s melodic softness, everything plays a vital role in Moreno’s compositional stance. There’s even a healthy amount of rock and soul elements, marking ‘Cornerstone’ as a truly modern and holistic effort.
The album features an impressive lineup of NYC-based musicians, the likes of Colin Stranahan (drums), Michael Kanan (piano), and Matt Stavrakas (double bass). Speaking about the record, Moreno explains: “It captures my personal journey of finding meaning in NYC”. Well, we appreciate the commitment; while this is not a record for everyone, jazz lovers will find it enlightening and advanced.
