It took us a while to fully understand the context in which Takar Nabam so successfully operates. In the process, we learnt a few things: first, he’s a really good guitarist, boasting extensive experience in the arts of arranging and Jazz harmony. Secondly, he’s on a mission to craft a truly personal and unique musical style, drawing both from his own Indian and Himalayan roots, and canonical water influences.
Such a cultural melting pot is evident in tracks such as ‘Nyokum Sokhi To’, in which Nabam resembles an Eastern-influenced John Mayer, or a more expansive and articulate Nick Drake. More recently, Takar has unveiled ‘Your Map’, a wonderful slice of soulful energy and acid jazz elegance, showcasing George Benson-esque riffing and a light, relaxing sonic character.
It’s a triumph. Between Nabam’s evocative and cathartic vocals and his nuanced guitar playing, ‘Your Map’ reveals itself as a prominent offering, further evidence of the groundbreaking talent enjoyed by the Indian creative. He hails from from the Arunachal Pradesh region, bordering Tibet.
Speaking about the record, Takar Nabam explains: “A song about lovers who know their way back home, no matter how bad things go or how far they wander. Its tender, jazz-influenced soul groove is the perfect companion on the long drive home.”
