By declaring on their Spotify bio: ‘sad songs and cute dogs’, Swedish band Junodef instantly catch our attention with a combo that’s hard to resist. Based in London, the band has championed an introspective brand of dark indie, evolving from their beginning as a punk rock outfit. Emerging as a breaking force in the live scene, the talented trio has been heavily involved in shows around the country, even going as far as touring with the legendary Editors.
Following up on a productive year, Junodef returns with a solemn, haunting gem, ‘Diane’s Robot’. Exploring themes of interpersonal challenge, the song seeks the feeling of “being very young and overwhelmed by things, people and feelings you don’t yet have the tools to handle”, as explained by the band.
It is not easy to describe ‘Diane’s Robot’. It is definitely a rewarding listening experience, channelling nostalgia and heartwrenching sadness by the truckloads. Introduced by a slow-paced, eerie arpeggiated guitar, the track soon evolves into a large, glum anthem, kidnapping the listener into its own pensive sonic universe. Perhaps best served at night or in moments of emotional fragility, ‘Diane’s Robot’ is the ultimate offering from a band that’s gone beyond their rock and punk imprint, exploring more serious songwriting and more eclectic tones.
Needless to say, they are winning at it. Aided by their light, choral and expressive vocals, Karin Grönkvist, Norea Persson and Tyra Örnbergis are certainly building a unique and authentic musical imprint. Watch them blossom, as the industry slowly reckons with their magnitude.
