Perhaps not a record for everyone, ‘Ö.P.N.V.’ caught our attention for its expansive, industrial tones and melancholic outlook. Add to that German lyrics, and you get an overwhelming, cathartic record that’s quirky and gloomy. Penned by shoegaze/post-punk outfit Super Arrogant, the track develops on gritty and spacious guitar distortions, with earthy, striking vocals crowning it all.
We don’t know much about Super Arrogant, but from what we have heard so far, their sound is likely to resonate with tons of European leftfield listeners – just as it did with us. Speaking about the single, they cryptically explain: “Somewhere between the hamster wheel and the daily groundhog – a missed bus, as a symbol of missed opportunities, missed encounters or daily defeats that not everyone necessarily grows from. A coldwave song that stumbles through a nighttime city with slow beats.”
