Sunstinger Dive into Spacious Shoegaze in ‘Worthless’ EP

The keen reader will be aware of how much we love shoegaze at Mesmerized. Anything spacious and hazy, really. Well, ‘Worthless’ is certainly one of this year’s highlights; a colossal, monumental shoegaze EP with the most smokey and ethereal sound. Bordering leftfield, post-rock and noise territories, the record features extremely wet and distant vocals, expansive and wide guitar tones and polite drums.

It’s a perfect offering, penned by Scottish hero Sunstinger. The band keeps their imagery rather fuzzy and mysterious, a feature that adds to the project’s overall hypnotising vibe. Introduced by title track ‘Worthless’, the EP showcases its true colours from the get-go, wrapping the listeners in a limitless reverb bath and long, evocative vocals. The result is almost an ambient effort – Sunstinger are in full swing here.

Follow-up ‘Sink’ backtracks a tiny bit, finding more punch and distortion. From here on, it’s all a balance between extreme noise stylings and more conventional shoegaze and alt-rock flavourings. A dreamy, yet intense record, which we highly recommend. Well done, Sunstinger.
