‘Nameless City’ was namely inspired by the H.P. Lovecraft novel of the same name – a fantasy, dreamy tale in which a character discovers a cryptic underground, lost civilization – and of course, the track is as mysterious and creepy as its literary counterpart. Penned by Portland-based grunge and hardcore outfit Sunset the Machine, the record is the perfect entry point into the talented American band’s artistic universe.
Built over overly fuzzy guitar tones, dynamic riffing and icy drum grooves, ‘Nameless City’ is not a ‘furious’ offering. Rather, it could be described as ‘obscure’, ‘dark’, wrapping the listeners in something we can only refer to as a ‘hallucinatory’ state of mind, a sort of scary, vibrant feeling that well fit into H.P. Lovecraft’s overall aesthetic.
Speaking about the track, Sunset the Machine explains: “The lyrics will fill you with terror and wonder while the music gets you banging your head and pumping your fist”. That’s quite a promise, and we can confirm that the group delivers exactly that… try it out for yourself.
