If you follow us regularly, you’ll know we have a particular sweet tooth for new-wave and retro material. Naturally, we couldn’t refrain from writing about Strange Souvenirs’ latest effort, the charming and nostalgic gem ‘Slight Mod’. The record is a slice of new-wave authenticity, really delving into the staple formula of the genre.
Introduced by drums and light synthetisers, the track soon welcomes spacious, reverbed guitars, nodding to shoegaze and dark wave in the process. It’s a very emotional effort – just not in its common meaning. ‘Slight Mod’ doesn’t engage in poignancy, rather it sets the scene for introspection and personal reflection, providing a meaningful sonic panorama that will help the listeners embrace their inner consciousness.
Emerging from Berlin, Strange Souvenirs have been active for a few years, showcasing a strong commitment to writing music that’s not superficial and taken for granted: instead, they like to create material that’s meaningful and drenched in tradition. Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘Slight Mod’, the duo reveal how British legends The Cure were their primary inspiration for it: “While waiting for a new “The Cure” album to drop (16 years and counting) we started writing our own little “Cure” songs to pass the time. Sombre, nostalgia-soaked songs that reverberate back to the Disintegration era.”
