As a lover of everything shoegaze, hazy and spacious, I find myself quite pleased with STEREOLUX’s latest EP. Hailing from Paris, the French group crafts a record that’s incredibly immersive and hypnotizing, weaving in and out of noisy, chaotic distortions, elegant electronica and dreamy melodies. Opener ‘who told you’ follows a rather blissful and mellow formula, with retro-flavoured synthetisers, light drum machines and a poignant topline crowning the track.
‘not afraid’ scrambles the sonic picture a fair bit, leaving elegance behind and jumping straight into heavy gaze territories. Cue the abstract guitar tones, cathartic drum grooves and distorted vocals. Honestly, I love it, the best episode in the EP, in my opinion. ‘please’ creates a stark contrast with the rest of the record, a theatrical, dramatic gem built on a single synth plus vocals.
At this point, the keen listener might be puzzled by STEREOLUX’s wide scope of action. Not to worry: taking a closer look, I was able to trace the common thread, found in the evocative and transformative energy that shocked me to my core, making sure I wouldn’t forget ‘Who Told You’ EP anytime soon.
