Stephanie Phillips Rescues Old Material in ‘Retrospective’

‘Retrospective’ is quite an interesting record. Setting aside its majestic musical qualities for a second, it’s helpful to note the historical meaning it carries. You see, what you are listening to was initially recorded in 1993. Without a chance to release it to the public (there were no independent distributors back then), the album stayed in a closet until now, when its author, American Folk songstress Stephanie Phillips, decided to share it with all of us. It’s quite charming and cathartic really, to discover such a hidden gem.

Built on Phillips’ signature wholesome folk stylings, the album moves at a slow pace through blissful vocal harmonies, hypnotising melodies and feathery acoustic guitars, embracing the listener in a gentle, yet meaningful artistic experience. Featuring fourteen tracks, ‘Retrospective’ is a beefy offering. In it, we can get a glimpse of youth energy and excitement, shared by a talented young Stephanie.

What’s notable, is how some of the songs have been overdubbed with modern recordings, creating a parallel between Phillips’ old and new vocals. That’s something unheard of, and it creates a striking emotion as one listens. As she explains: “It features my much younger self singing melodies and my current self singing the harmony tracks.”
