Starmaps are living proof that geographical borders don’t define art-making. A talented and inspirational synth-pop duo, the project champions dreamy and ethereal sonic material, building records that feel majestic and cinematic. Formed by Adelaide-based singer, guitarist and songwriter Dan Gaskin and London-based DJ/producer Rachel Ho, the pair has been collaborating remotely, penning gems such as ‘Somebody Say Something’, their latest effort.
There’s a strong flavour of poignancy in it, with Gaskin lending his gritty and evocative vocals to Ho’s complex and futuristic electronic production. The result is an artistic pairing that seems to be working well, making for a listening experience that’s memorable and meaningful.
Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘Somebody Say Something’, the duo explain: “Written amid lockdown, the song captures longing, loneliness and isolation when words can mean so much, but pale in comparison to touch. Time alone can be both a wish and a curse.” A common theme in our complicated times, and we are confident the song will connect with large audiences.
