Being a teenager in the 90s meant – with all probabilities – being fans of Swedish supergroup The Cardigans. And if you were part of such a category, you might recall with affection the global hit ‘Erase/Rewind’. Munich-based group Squareplatz certainly remembers it – perhaps that’s what pushed them to release an electronic cover of it.
Formed by Sezgin İnceel (Turkey) and Stas Mishchenko (Ukraine), Squareplatz throw ‘Erase/Rewind’ into chill dance territories, even giving it some trip-hop flavouring. The chorus features a big synth motif, which might become handy when played in aperitifs or daytime clubs. The iconic piano sound in the bridge section echoes pure 90s euphoria. It couldn’t get any better!
Speaking about the inspiration behind the cover, Squareplatz explain: “We seek to unearth the sounds we listened to during our childhood and early youth, blending them with today’s rhythms”. And that’s exactly what they do, as showcased so gloriously by their latest effort.
