Spyderhuff Return with Playful Gem ‘Future’

We last wrote about Spyderhuff in the summer, celebrating their cover version of ‘Wichita Lineman’ as “a deeply moving homage that undoubtedly stands out on its own merits”. We stand by our words: the Detroit-based outfit has been delightfully refining its specific sonic imprint over the years, now focusing on earthy, playful blues and alternative stylings.

‘Future’ is the perfect evidence of Spyderhuff’s latest effort, the record is rather dry and quirky, focusing on charming spoken word – at least in the verses – and a glitchy arrangement favouring drum grooves and abstract textures. Growing in intensity as it goes along, the piece manages to deconstruct Spyderhuff’s mainstay character into a decisively modern and fresh identity. It’s a win-win for us.

Taken from the band’s latest EP ‘Everybody Needs a Dog’, ‘Future’ is a promising step in the band’s rich and productive career. Speaking about the inspiration behind the song, they explain: “Now that the US election season is behind us, maybe there’s a little room for some lighthearted adventure. Let ‘Mr. Future-Man’ narrate a blow-by-blow retro vision of the future.”
