I first fell in love with the work of Declan Feenan last year. The London-based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who performs under the moniker Spy From Moscow had just released an utterly intoxicating tune called ‘Soldier Song’, and I was completely smitten. I knew the track would form part of his forthcoming debut album ‘Night Music’, and today I am extremely honoured to introduce you to the entire record.
Featuring seven utterly beautiful songs, ‘Night Music’ is a deeply personal offering from the artist. Written in the months and years after his father’s death, the tunes deal with the impact that event had on his relationships at the time.
‘Dolls’ is the stunning album opener, and sees Declan opting for a stripped-down approach with only his vocals and an acoustic guitar present. The minimalist technique highlights the track’s intimacy and creates the ideal atmosphere for what follows.
‘Whispering In The Walls’ then steps up with raw guitar work and another exceptional vocal performance before the aforementioned ‘Soldier Song’ is introduced.
With four more songs to discover, I won’t spoil the intricate details that make each tune on the record shine. Instead, I’ll simply reveal that ‘Night Music’ is easily one of the best albums I’ve heard this year.
