One could write a book about the overwhelming dualism in ‘De Guerre’. It’s certainly striking, and a strong reminder of spill tab’s eclectic, international roots, now spilling (excuse the pun) all over her artistry in what resembles a cathartic, liberating experience. Of French-Korean origins, the talented songstress now calls Los Angeles her home, infusing her musical work with bilingual prowess and a refusal to play by the mainstream rules.
‘De Guerre’ is the perfect evidence of that. Punching above its weight, the single starts off with what resembles polite French post-punk: intense, gloomy and icy. At the one-minute mark, the dualism comes into effect, with spill tab switching to English lyrics and a lush electronic pop flair that’s more elegant and evocative. Eventually, the outro blends the best of both worlds, celebrating ‘De Guerre’ as an incredibly interesting, bold episode, one that we are proud to share in our publication.
This is what we like to see in the music industry: artists who don’t play by the rules. Artists who dare. spill tab did, she took a gamble and won the whole house.
